The clutch system of your Audi is responsible of engaging and disengaging your engine from the transmission. This provides you the smooth transition when starting up, stopping, idling in neutral, and when shifting gears. In its simplest form, the clutch allows engine power to be applied gradually when the vehicle is starting out and cuts it when shifting gears to avoid gear crunching. As you engage the clutch, power is transferred from the engine to the transmission and drive wheels. On the other hand, disengaging the clutch stops the power transfer, allowing the engine to continue spinning without exerting force to the drive wheels. An important component of the clutch is the Audi pressure plates. This is the spring-loaded clamp attached to the flywheel. It contains a sheet metal cover, heavy release springs, metal pressure ring which provides a friction area for the clutch disc, release levers, and a thrust ring or fingers for the release bearings.

The release levers of the Audi Pressure Plates lighten the clamping force of the springs when the clutch is disengaged. Typically, the springs used on most pressure plates are of diaphragm-type, while some use multiple coil springs. Some high-performance pressure plates are semi-centrifugal, meaning that they employ small weights on the tips of the diaphragm in order to intensify the clamping force as engine revolutions increases. The Audi Pressure Plate is usually a cast iron plate that provides a pivot fulcrum for the diaphragm spring, a sufficient friction area for the clutch disc, and a mounting surface for the drive straps.
